Overview: The mission of the NIGC is to (1) promote tribal economic development, self-sufficiency, and strong tribal governments; (2) maintain the integrity of the Indian gaming industry; and (3) ensure that Tribes are the primary beneficiaries of their gaming activities. Background: The National Indian Gaming Commission was created by Congress through the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 (P.L. 100-497). The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) established the NIGC as an independent federal agency within the Department of the Interior (DOI).
