About the role
Develop, interpret, revise and implement safety standards specific to the transportation of military munitions by rail, maritime and motor, to ensure alignment with DoD and other federal regulations. Investigate transportation-related accidents involving DoD ammunition and explosives (AE), determine root causes and develop preventive measures to mitigate risk of recurrence. Monitor compliance with federal regulations, including 49 CFR and DoD guidance related to the safe transportation of military munitions. Draft and review policies and procedures to ensure the safe handling, storage, and transport of explosives. Provide technical guidance to subordinate units and commercial carriers to maintain safety standards. Evaluate the effectiveness of commercial motor carrier safety programs, explosives safety programs and transportation systems (e.g., Defense Transportation Tracking System).
