Medical Technician

Works as a Medical Technician (Phlebotomy/Front Desk), obtaining venous and capillary blood specimens from adults and children using knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique and phlebotomy material selection. Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection and is based upon knowledge and standard operating procedures regarding blood specimen types, anticoagulants, transport conditions, test requested, patient criteria and medical staff input. Serves as receptionist at the laboratory front desk, greeting patients, providing them with appropriate guidance, answering nontechnical inquiries, and referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff member. Aids physicians by processing a wide variety of clinical pathology specimens for shipment to civilian and military reference laboratories.
